Sunan at-Tirmithiy

'Adī Ibn-Ḥātim said, "Messenger of God, we send ouy trained dogs out [to hunt]." He, peace and blessings of God be upon him, replied, "[You can] eat what they catch for you." 'Adī asked, "Even if they kill [the catch]?" He replied, "Even if they kill [the catch], as long as no other dog joined them." 'Adī then said, "Messenger of God, we use wooden spears [to hunt]." He replied, "You can eat what the spear pierces, but do not eat what is strikes and kills] with its shaft (1)."
(1) If the animal is killed by the blow of the spear's shaft, then it is not permissible to eat. This rule is detailed in the following verse of the Holy Qur'ān "Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns...". (5 [al-Mā'idah ]: 3).
